I never thought I would be telling Zare’s back story–but the story insisted on being told. What makes a princess into a mercenary? We’ll find out.

When this is over, we’ll have to have a poll about which story new readers should start with: The River Rebellion or the Badlands Job. Right now I’d say it depends on who you are, but the story isn’t over yet, so we’ll see!

This is Zare

Some people’s lives change because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Some stumble upon great treasure or commit an act of great bravery. Others find out they are long lost royals meant for a higher call.
Me? I watched my seaside castle burn to the ground.
I only survived because the evil Empress siezing my city happened to forget that Zam Caspian married a nymph woman and therefore all his children are quite self sufficient underwater. I suppose you could say I was a royal who found out that I was really meant to be long lost.
It’s not as bad as it sounds. My life is much more exciting that it might have been. I’ve smuggled Angari jewelry, impersonated duchesses, hidden crossbows in hoopskirts, and without my change in fortune I never would have met Quill.
